Another update on the Honda Civ issue

Apparently I am a squeaky wheel about to get greased.

So you remember from this and this about my 2007 Honda Civix EX’s defective rear upper control arm, which in turn jacked up my alignment and therefore my rear tires, right? And how the dealer said Honda wasn’t paying for it because my car was no longer under warranty, even though it is a part that has been defective since Day 1, not something that has gone wrong due to the number of miles on the vehicle?

And remember how I called Honda and was told that sometimes they do pay for stuff like this, but I needed the service bulletin number for them to look it up and so I had to call Reddell and get it, and then when I called Honda back, the bitch who was “helping” me said there was nothing they could do, the car was out of warranty and too bad that the part was defective when I bought the car? And how I was all, “Look bitch, I paid $20k for a car that I was told was NOT defective, and now you’re telling me that it is defective but you’re not going to fix it and where’s Ralph Nader because I’m pretty sure that violates some kind of lemon law.”

And she was all, “Well I can’t help you” and I was all “Then forward me to your supervisor or someone who can because this is bullshit” and she was all “Fine I’ll take down your info but you probably won’t hear from us til after the holidays.”

And then on Dec. 22 a nice man named Tony left me a voicemail at work telling me that apparently I had raised enough of a ruckus that they assigned me a case manager, and he was it, and he was going to be reviewing my case and would call me back after the holidays.

So today I got a call from Nice Man Tony asking me if Jim the service adviser from Reddell had called me back yet, and I said no (all the while picturing him sitting on his stool glaring at Ian and I from across the service department while Eric, our service rep, went to ask him on our behalf exactly why we should have to pay for this issue when it was obviously a Honda problem). Nice Man Tony sounded sounded surprised that Jim hadn’t called me, and he told me that he was going to make a quick call and I would be hearing back from him shortly.

About 20 minutes later I received a call from Eric at Reddell letting me know that Honda is going to pay for the repair. And not just the defective rear control arm. They are also going to pay for the alignment my car needs because their defective rear control arm jacked it up. The only thing they’re not going to pay for is new rear tires. But in all honestly, I was expecting to buy new tires sooner rather than later anyway since the tread is getting pretty low.

Ha, but Eric says, “And the tires are $139.99,” to which I replied, “Well that’s OK, I can get tires for cheaper anywhere else so I’ll just bring the car in to you guys for the repair.”

No fucking way am I paying $300 for TWO tires. Especially when I can get comparable tires at Sears for probably just a little more than half the price. Plus they do that $5 per tire roadside assistance thing that’s pretty sweet.

Anyway, I scheduled an appointment with Honda to bring the Civ in on Jan. 17 to get the repairs done. Let’s hope they aren’t so pissed off at me that they screw something else up just so they can still get money out of me. Although they should be getting reimbursed from Honda for the repair so they should still be happy. Though I bet they were inflating the price JUST A TAD when they thought I was going to be rolling over and vomiting up the money to them.

So, yay. This saves me anywhere from $300 – $450, depending on what I get the tires for at Sears.

I think this calls for a celebratory “I fought the car dealer and I fucking WON” beer, don’t you think?

  1. you squeaky wheel, you! Like you need a reason to have a beer, HAH!

  2. I am bookmarking this page. I have the same exact issue as you – warranty is expired and I finally just figured out why I’ve been blowing through tires. As I write this I’m in a Honda dealership trying to convince these morons that HONDA needs to pay for this. I even found the service bulletin online, showed them, and they still think it’s not covered because of my warranty. Idiots. Now that I have another person I’ve found that WON… I’ve got precedence. YAY! You ROCK! Thank you for fighting the fight I’m going through now. I’ll do my best to get back to you with my experience. Unbelieveable.

  3. BTW – for anyone else who is about to go through this as well. I’ve got a 2006 Honda Civic EX. I also called Honda corporate customer service and opened a case (based on my earlier conversation with this dealership). I recommend you open a case yourself. Also a good site to file your experience with is “AutoBeef.com” which will also point you to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (safercar.gov) – file a safety complaint! I am going to… Honda needs to turn this safety bulletin into a recall.

  4. I am going through the same thing as well. I left my car at a dealership and also have a case manager. The dealership said that since my car was out of warranty, that most likely I would have to pay for it. This is crap. Mileage has NOTHING to do with a deffective control arm that THEY put on the car in the first place. I really need some positive feedback, because all the dealerships say I have no chance of not having to pay for this.

  5. Jennifer – I’m at a total loss. First – sorry to hear you’re going through this, too. I ended up paying my local Firestone dealer (who’s been awesome to me) to order the Honda OEM part and install it for me. I had to get it fixed and there was no way I was paying the dealership for it. Besides, I have a lifetime alignment plan with Firestone, so I saved on that, too. Honda was very rude to me when I called their corporate customer service. They said they WILL NOT assign a case manager to me – my warranty is expired and that’s that. I’ve got a host of 4-lettered words for them but I’ll refrain. Please let me know how you’re progressing with this. I’m in the middle of buying a house and planning a wedding, so trying to sue for $500 isn’t at the top of my list lately. But I’m hoping to either find or start a class-action suit against Honda. Never again will I purchase a Honda product. I don’t care how good they claim to be. BTW – fixing the rear upper control arms did the trick. No more problems with the back end swaying like a boat over bumps, no poor tire wear… It’s all better.

  6. Well, positive feed back or none… I got a call from the dealership, and they said there’s “nothing wrong with the control arm” (which my private mechanic said there was, and I trust him, considering I’ve been with him since I practically started driving), HOWEVER, I all of the sudden need new compliance bushings in the front… a cost of 400 bucks, AND if I don’t get them replaced, my control arm WILL ruin, and that I have to pay for everything, including an alignment. I am just so frustrated right now. I just spent 90 bucks on a stupid diagnosis that had NOTHING to do with the problem I was complaining about. I’m taking it out of the dealership and am going to take it to my mechanic. Right now, at this point, I am making a savings plan to pay off this car as soon as possible. Then, whenever I do get a new car, which hopefully won’t be any time soon unless this piece of crap dies, it WON’T be a Honda.

Also, I’m planning a wedding too, and this wasn’t meant to be in my budget…

  7. Congrats on your wedding. :) Yeah, don’t give Honda any more of your hard earned money when you have a mechanic you trust. Your posts have prompted me to put together a letter to a class action attorney and see what they think. If I get any positive response – believe me – I’ll be sure to pass that information along.

  8. Thanks so much! Congrats to you too, by the way. It’s just so frustrating, so like I said, I just don’t want to bother with it anymore. I’ve actually lost sleep over this, wondering if the purchase I made 3 years ago was a waste of money and if I’ve been suckered. I’d hate to think that, or to think that anyone else is going through this.

  9. I felt the same way – suckered. It’s ok. $500 and my car is better. BUT! Honda will never see another dime from me once this car is paid off. Actually, as soon as I close on my house I’m refinancing with someone other than Honda – probably Capital One who I’ve always liked.

  10. Yeah, I refinanced over a year ago since Honda likes to charge OUTRAGEOUS interest rates. I went with Fidelity Bank, and they’ve been pretty great. I’m going to be tacking an extra 100 bucks to my car payment a month, and just save until I have enough too pay off the car. I figure tacking that 100 bucks will bring down the payoff amount faster.

  11. Ok – I have a draft letter ready to go. Some proof reading, etc… and I’m firing it off to an attorney that handles national class action lawsuits. We’ll see what they say.

  12. Wonderful. Let me know what they have to say about everything.

  13. I didn’t realize so many of us had the same problem. I have a Civic coupe 2006, I travel a lot and have put on a lot of mileage and I am having a weird noise coming from my passenger rear. I found the bulletin and made an appointment with my Honda dealership. I also called Honda Customer Service to ensure that this was being covered under warranty only to have them tell me that it was my responsibility and I was over the mileage. This is BS … first off it’s a manufacterer’s default, so I dont understand why I have to pay for something that is their fault. I am so angry right now. Honda Customer Service said that it depended on the dealership and that maybe I can work something out with them. I took my car in a year after I leased it because the tire was slanting (not sure why) but they did a wheel alignment that I had to pay for and sent me on my way and now again it is slanting and there is a weird humming noise coming from the rear. I am so tired of their run arounds.NEVER AGAIN!

  14. Ha! That was my problem. Trust me, you’re better off taking it to a trusted mechanic. DON’T GO TO A DEALERSHIP. They may even decide that something ELSE is wrong with your car. Trust me, it’s a waste of time, money, and your patience. I didn’t win, you may, but like I said, if you want to avoid any kind of headache, PLEASE find a trusted mechanic to look at it. They will save you money, and most likely do a better job.

  15. Yay. That’s 4 people now. Nessa & Jennifer – if you could take the time to drop me a quick email with your email addys… I’ll do my best to keep you informed of my progress. greg@gregonweb.com

  16. E-mail sent. Hopefully this will be an issue that gets resolved. As I go through google search after google search, I’m finding more people with the same problems as us… AND MORE!
